The U.S. Navy suspended the search Saturday for a Navy pilot still missing after two FA/18 fighter jets collided Friday in the western Pacific west of Wake Island, according to the U.S. 7th Fleet. The pilot is presumed dead. "This is an exceptionally difficult time for the friends and family of the missing pilot and the Navy community," said Rear Adm. Christopher Grady, Commander, Carl Vinson Carrier Strike Group.
The two FA/18s collided seven miles from the aircraft carrier USS Carl Vinson, which they were preparing to land on, according to the Navy. One pilot was rescued by helicopter shortly after and has since been treated aboard the USS Carl Vinson. Neither pilot has been identified pending notification of family.
