"Funny", "fearless" and "comedic genius" are just some of the ways entertainers have described Joan Rivers following the announcement of her death.
The 81-year-old comedian and TV host had been on life support in Mount Sinai Hospital since having a cardiac arrest in New York last week.
Her daughter Melissa said she died surrounded by family and friends.
She added: "My mother's greatest joy in life was to make people laugh.
"Although that is difficult to do right now, I know her final wish would be that we return to laughing soon."
Kely Osbourne tweeted: "I love you with all my heart @Joan_Rivers my life will never be the same with out you!"
Friends and other comedians have paid tribute to the actress and stand-up comedian who recently turned her attention to the red carpet's worst dressed celebrities, hosting the E! network's Fashion Police.
Her co-host on the show Kelly Osbourne tweeted that "this is one of the worst days of my life" and posted a series of messages on Facebook including: "You were one of the best gifts life has ever given me!
"I'm completely heartbroken by the loss of my beloved Joan."
In 2010, Rivers tweeted a joke about her death, saying: "With all the plastic surgery I've had I'm worried that when I die, God won't recognize me!"

US talk show host Ellen DeGeneres said: "Joan Rivers will always be a pioneer. She paved the way for a lot of comedians. I'm very sad she's gone."
Fellow American TV host Jimmy Kimmel wrote "we lost a great one in Joan Rivers - she was funny all the way to the end", while Whoopi Goldberg tweeted "my friend Joan Rivers has passed away once again to quote Billy Crystal... There are no words. Bon Voyage Joan."
Star of Girls Lena Dunham wrote: "Watching Joan Rivers do stand up at age 81 was incredible: athletic, jaw-dropping, terrifying, essential. It never stopped. Neither will she."
Kevin Hart described her as "a comedic genius".
The American comedian added: "She will be missed. I'm honoured to be able to call her my friend."
Rihanna encouraged followers to "please keep Joan Rivers in your prayers" while others referenced a documentary about the comedian called Joan Rivers: A Piece of Work, which is now streaming on Netflix.
American comedian Nick Swardson tweeted: "RIP Joan Rivers. People don't know what a pioneer she was. Check out her documentary. Beautiful and heart breaking. Be at peace, Joan."
