Latest Newscast: Terrorism in Russia, Mayoral Appointees Named, New Laws ... - WNYC


Good morning.  Here are the latest headlines from the WNYC newsroom.



At least 14 people were killed today in a suicide attack on a bus in Volgograd bus, according to Russia's main investigative agency. Yesterday, 17 people were killed in a railway station bombing. An agency spokesman says the bombs were similar, suggesting the attacks are connected.


Mayor-elect Bill de Blasio is expected to name his schools chancellor today. According to the New York Times and Wall Street Journal, he has selected a 40-year veteran of the city schools, former deputy chancellor Carmen Farina,  He has also named former U.S. Attorney Zachary Carter as New York City's Corporation Counsel.


A number of new laws will soon take effect in New York come January 1st, including the first of three new tax cuts for small businesses, an additional near 10-percent tax cut for manufacturers and the first of three minimum wage increases.


Partly sunny, breezy and chilly today with temperatures dropping into the mid 30s. Tonight will be freezing with a low near 23.
