Revelers ringing in the new year in New York City will face raw temperatures as the ball drops, but predictions that the Northeast would be hit with blizzards and record snowfall later this week have been toned down.

The worst of the New Year's Eve weather will be in the Great Lakes, with sub-zero cold in Minnesota and some heavy snow bound for celebrations in Chicago and Detroit, Kevin Roth at The Weather Channel said Tuesday.

The high temperature Tuesday in Minneapolis will be 1 degree, with wind chills expected to plunge to 25 below zero. International Falls, Minn., will top out at minus-13. Ski resorts in nearby Duluth, Minn., are closing because of the dangerous temperatures.

Detroit and Chicago could expect between 6 and 10 inches of snow Tuesday night, according to Roth. Other areas of the Plains and the Midwest were set for 1-to-4 inches.

By 5 a.m. ET Tuesday almost 120 flights due to arrive or depart on Tuesday or Wednesday at Chicago O’Hare International airport were canceled, according to FlightAware.

This was both in anticipation for the coming storm and a hangover from another system which hit the area over the weekend and canceled more than 200 flights at O’Hare on Sunday, Roth said.

Meanwhile, the storm might not be as bad as first forecast when it reaches the Northeast, according to Roth. He told NBC News the blizzard conditions and record snows predicted by some systems did not look set to materialize.

Early Tuesday, the storm was moving over Montana and the Dakotas and bearing down on the Midwest. On New Year’s Day, it was set to shift eastward, with between 4 to 8 inches forecast from Cincinnati to Boston through Friday.
