Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport is all clear after the discovery of a written bomb threat prompted an evacuation Sunday afternoon.
The airport announced the “all clear” just after 6 p.m. (7 p.m. ET). After a complete sweep of the airport that included the use of bomb sniffing dogs, authorities did not find a device of any nature, Sgt. Johnny Williams of the Birmingham police told NBC News.
Williams said that an airport employee discovered a note in a men’s restroom that contained the threat.
Airport and law enforcement officials had responded "to a threat received around 4:00 p.m.,” the airport said in a post on its Facebook page, adding that the airport had been evacuated.
Nearly all outgoing flights were delayed, and at least seven incoming flights were diverted to other airports, including the Huntsville International Airport, Nashville International Airport and Montgomery Regional Airport, according to real-time tracking information on the airport's website.
Chris Kieffer, 31, a resident of Tupelo, Miss., who drove to the Alabama airport to catch a flight to Atlanta, said everyone inside the airport had been instructed to go outside, where they await additional information.
