NEW YORK - Four young children and one woman were stabbed to death in a bloody rampage in Brooklyn late on Saturday night, police said.
A toddler, a 7-year-old girl and a 9-year-old boy were pronounced dead at the scene after officials arrived just before 11 p.m. ET, New York City police said in a statement released early Sunday. Paramedics rushed a 37-year-old woman and a 5-year-old boy to local hospitals but the two died, it added.
"Officers observed a total of five persons, unconscious and unresponsive, all with stab wounds about the upper portions of their bodies," according to police.
A person of interest was in custody, a New York police spokesman told NBC News. The Daily News, citing a police source, said it was probably a man related to several of the victims.
Police did not release the identities of the victims.
A neighbor told the newspaper that she knew the children.
“I always see (the kids) running around here,” May Chan said, according to the newspaper. “They run around by my garage playing. They run up and down screaming. They’re little kids ... that’s so heartbreaking. Innocent kids, my God.”
It wasn't immediately reported what kind of weapon was used in the attack, which the police spokesman said occurred around 10:30 p.m. ET. in the 800 block of 57th Street.
The working-class neighborhood is home to many Chinese and Hispanic immigrants.
