Surges of cold air from Canada are making their way into central and eastern states this week, bringing cooler temperatures and snow warnings for the Northeast.
Temperatures across the Midwest have already dropped as many as 20 degrees below average in some states, The Weather Channel reported. Chicago got its first taste of winter Wednesday, when the city's far west suburbs saw snowflakes and even some accumulation.
Snow warnings are in effect for parts of New York.
By this weekend, another shot of cold air will take over central and eastern states, with cold fronts making their way as far south as Orlando, Fla., the Weather Channel said.
Afternoon temperatures will keep the South shivering, reaching into the 50s, mainly in parts of Tennessee, northern Arkansas, northern Mississippi, northern Alabama, northern Georgia and North Carolina.
Daily record lows may occur this weekend, in areas including Cincinnati, Ohio; Nashville, Tenn.; and Charlotte, N.C. Frost advisories were in effect in parts of the Ohio Valley as temperatures dipped into the high 20s in some areas, the weather service reported.
Early next week, Montana, Wyoming and the Dakotas may also see snow accumulations. Elevated areas of western Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and Wisconsin could also see some snow, according to the Weather Channel.
NBC News' Matthew DeLuca contributed to this report.
