LAS VEGAS -- Actor/director Danny DeVito made an appearance at CES Wednesday that was by turns hilarious and occasionally bawdy. He also found time to display his "troll foot," which has become a Twitter meme.
The diminutive DeVito took the stage carrying a shorter chair and joked about his height, then spent about half an hour talking about technology, showing clips from the Blu-Ray release of the movie Hoffa -- which he was promoting -- and answering questions from the audience about his career.
The discussion, about the intersection of tech and entertainment, was hosted by Panasonic. DeVito was joined on stage by CNET's Greg Sandoval. DeVito hammed it up, occasionally pacing the stage, and tossed in several raunchy jokes.
In an interview afterward with USA TODAY, he said, "I was trying to keep it fun because, you know, technology is technology."
DeVito said he's "always been excited" about new technology. His favorite tool is his iPhone, which he uses to record audio and shoot photos and video.
"I use this every day, I text and tweet and do everything," he said, flipping the phone around. But he said he had to turn Siri off: "She's a ball-breaker."
DeVito has a popular Twitter account, where he tweets regularly and shares photos of his foot in various locations with the hashtag #TrollFoot. Yesterday, he pulled off his sock and shoe on stage to show his foot, after a request from an audience member. The "troll foot" is a joke from a scene from FX's comedy show It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia that has taken on a life of its own.
In addition to his iPhone, DeVito also likes Dropbox and YouSendIt to transfer files, including music that he'll cut into projects. To edit, he uses Final Cut Pro.
In response to a question about illegal downloads, he said: "Downloading movies? Who's doing that? I don't know what to say about that. There's no way to really stop people. The Internet's free."
"What are you going to do, go to someone's house and tell them, 'Stop jumping on the bed'?" DeVito cracked.
DeVito, 68, reminisced about his decades-long career, and a question about Taxi co-star, the late Andy Kaufman, sent him on a roll. "Andy Kaufman was the greatest," DeVito said. "He's here right now with us. I loved being with Andy all the time."
So what's next for the actor, director and producer? DeVito just wrapped a theater production of Sunshine Boys in London, which he says will come to Los Angeles in the fall. The ninth season of It's Always Sunny begins shooting in April.
He's not sure if this will be the show's final season, however. "We would keep doing it; it's just a matter of let's see what happens, how it goes," he said in an interview.
As for recent movies he's enjoyed, he said, "I like bits of a lot of things." He named Beasts of the Southern Wild, Silver Linings Playbook, Lincoln, Argo and the documentary Searching for Sugar Man as recent favorites.
"Argo was old-school -- the kind of movies we used to make all the time that we don't really make anymore," he said.
