New ad: Avoiding "fiscal cliff" just a start

Just over two weeks from the brink of a potential economic crisis, the non-partisan campaign Fix the Debt will air its first television ad Sunday, a six-figure buy that will make the case that lawmakers "need to do more than avoid the fiscal cliff."

The ad features an Army reservist, a CPA, a teacher, a farmer, a physician, and a businesswoman, all calling on both political parties to reach across the aisle and construct a long-term deal to rein in the federal deficit.

"It's not a Republican, Democrat thing," Shelley Williams, the physician, says in the spot. "If we want this fixed, I mean it sounds kind of corny, but we all need to do it together."

  • Obama, Boehner meet on "fiscal cliff"
  • Where are the GOP's "fiscal cliff" spending cuts?

Teacher Jenny Plum adds: "I would love for everything to start getting resolved now so that I can tell my children and the children that I teach - and not be lying to them when I say - that there is a bright future and you can do anything that you want to do."

Founded by deficit gurus Erskine Bowles, President Clinton's former chief of staff, and former Sen. Alan Simpson, R-Wyo., Fix the Debt has funneled much of its $43 million war chest on print and online campaigns, the Los Angeles Times reports. But as Congress and President Obama scramble to carve out a deal by year's end to avert the series of potentially devastating tax hikes and spending cuts, the organization will likely ramp up its presence on the airwaves.

The ad, according to the group, will run nationally.
