‘X Factor’: Alas, poor Jason Brock

You think Tuesday's voting was nerve wracking – tonight we learn the results of the first ever viewer voting on the Britney Spears edition of "X Factor."

But first, an inspirational performance by boy band One Direction – inspirational because they were each solo contestants on the British "X Factor," and were put together into a group by none other than our own Supreme Judge, Simon "Pudgy" Cowell, and went on to a sell 13 million records, according to Shouting Off Camera Wrestling Announcer Guy.

Lots of energy from the boys on their hit "Live While We're Young." Trying to figure out which one is NOT dating Youth Demographic Judge Demi Lovato adds considerable interest.

Let's send some contestants to safety: Arin Ray, Paige Thomas, Diamond White, Vino Alan, Jenel Garcia, and the trio Emblem3.

More One Direction, after a video clip reminding us that Pudgy put the group together. They sing "Little Things" seated like they're around a campfire. Pleasant harmonies, though none of them seems fit for a solo career.

Let's save a few more: Carly Rose Sonnenclar, Tate Stevens, and Beatrice Miller. The two girls mean that all of Teen Mentor Britney Spears protégées have made it through.

5th Harmony, the girl group put together by Pudgy is also saved.

And that leaves two acts to "sing for survival": CeCe Frey, who has struggled with likeability issues, song choice issues, and makeup issues throughout the competition…and Jason Brock who has consistently been packaged as "Mr. Entertainment," a Wayne Newton for a generation that doesn't want a Wayne Newton, by his coach, LA "God Must Really Hate Me to Stick Me With the Over-25 Group" Reid.

CeCe specializes in down-but-not-out numbers, and for tonight she's chosen Cher's "You Haven't Seen The Last of Me," which she delivers it in one of her best – if a bit shouty – performances.

But Jason utterly out-sings her on "Total Eclipse of the Heart" with some nice soulful touches.

Now it's up to the judges to decide, with the proviso that in the case of a tie, the contestant with the lowest popular votes will go home. Well, there's still quite a bit of time to fill on the show so – what do you know, it's a tie, with Demi and Pudgy voting to send home Jason, and LA and Brit voting to cut CeCe.

Jason turns out to be the low man and he's out. "I did it for the gays and Japan!" he says.

It feels like the show should be over, but this episode introduces a singing competition novelty: We're going to learn the rank order of the contestants in the voting. Of course, we know CeCe was number 12. And the rest are:

And, the X-testant who got the most votes from viewers this week:

Yup, the country singing, over 25-year-old guy, who's nobody's idea of the next country star, is top ranked. Pudgy, who's been acting quite certain he's found his next One Dimension on this show already, is really going to hit the ice cream now!
